Hacking: For good or evil?

In 2008,
Miami was the headquarters for one of the largest criminal computer hacks of all
time when Alberto Gonzalez managed a global operation to victimize major U.S.
corporations. Just two weeks ago, Miami was the headquarters for hundreds of
ethical hackers and information
security professionals.
Hacker Halted USA 2009 was held in Miami from Sept. 23 to 25 and provided the
opportunity for IT security experts, managers and industry leaders to interact
about the current state of information security .

Cyberspace: The next "Wild West"

Throughout history, nations have fought to expand and
define their borders. In cyberspace, this becomes more difficult. Decisions on
how to define a nation’s territory in cyberspace will affect future laws,
declarations of war following cyber attacks and how we control our personal and
national cyber “space.” Cyber experts recently discussed the issue of

Can the same Law of
Armed Conflict guiding principles apply in cyberwarfare?

People have attempted to define and
regulate the principles of warfare for thousands of years. From artillery
warfare to air combat, the Law of Armed Conflict has shaped the way nations view
war. Some have said that cyberspace is the next warfighting domain.
According to a report by the National
Research Council, the United States needs to develop a clear national policy on
cyber attacks. Cyber enthusiasts on LinkedIn’s Cyber Warfare Forum Initiative
recently discussed the impact of LOAC in cyber attacks.

NSCI employee supports first Trident Warrior 2009

As part of the National Security Cyberspace Institute’s
support to the Joint Functional Component Command for Global Strike, Offutt AFB,
Neb., and the U.S. Navy, Dan Clevenger attended the first of three experiments
Feb. 2 to 5 at the Navy’s new Maritime Operations Center – Experimental (MOC-X)
facility at the Norfolk Naval Station in Norfolk, Va.

Conference brings international partners together

With speakers from seven
nations and delegates representing 12, the Cyber Warfare 2009 conference, hosted
by Defence IQ, was truly an international event. Held in London Jan. 28 to 30,
Cyber Warfare 2009 brought members of the military, government, academia and the
private sector together with one goal – to exchange insight regarding cyber
attack defense and preventative strategies.
